On May 13, the Symposium on Technological Innovation and Industrial Development of Wood and Bamboo Equipment was held in Wuyishan, Nanping City, Fujian Province. Co-hosted by the Institute of Wood Industry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, the Fujian Academy of Forestry, the School of Materials Engineering of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, and the Nanping Municipal Forestry Bureau, the event brought together experts from domestic forestry research institutions, representatives of industry associations, and leaders of leading enterprises. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on key topics such as breakthroughs in wood and bamboo equipment technologies, the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, and the high-quality development of the industry, with the aim of establishing a platform for collaboration among industry, academia, research, and application, thereby advancing China’s wood and bamboo sector toward intelligence, high-end sophistication, and green sustainability.

At the opening ceremony, the China Bamboo Industry Association held a launch and presentation event for its group standards, and unveiled a series of high‑impact scientific and technological achievements, including projects under the 14th Five-Year National Key R&D Program and Fujian Province’s major science and technology special program—“Challenge‑Based Recruitment.” These initiatives inject core‑technology-driven momentum into the development of the wood and bamboo industries.

During the invited expert keynote session, Researcher Lü Bin, Director of the Wood Industry Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Forestry, presented on “Trends and Reflections on Technological Innovation in the Wood and Bamboo Industries,” systematically reviewing the current status and emerging trends in China’s wood and bamboo sector. Researcher Guan Fengying from the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation outlined the latest research advances and practical outcomes of strip‑clearing cultivation techniques for moso bamboo forests. Gao Rui, Deputy Director of the Institute of Forestry Industry and Economics at the Fujian Academy of Forestry and a senior engineer, explained how technological innovation in forestry equipment in Fujian Province supports the high‑quality development of the bamboo industry. Meanwhile, Associate Researcher Zhang Wenfu, Deputy Director of the Forestry Equipment Institute at the Zhejiang Academy of Forestry, examined the current state of mechanical harvesting, transportation, and primary processing of bamboo materials, and discussed potential pathways for future technological advancement.

During the session on technology and industrial‑technology matchmaking, seven representatives from research institutions and enterprises took turns presenting their technological achievements and industry applications: Researcher Huang Anmin of the Wood Industry Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Forestry outlined how standardization is driving innovation and development in the bamboo industry; Researcher Liu Huanrong of the International Bamboo and Rattan Centre demonstrated how bamboo‑grading technologies are enabling more efficient and higher‑value‑added industrial growth; Millennium Boat New Materials Technology Group and Fujian Du’s Wood Industry respectively shared their innovative practices in wood–bamboo structural processing and their experiences with digital transformation in the bamboo–wood sector; Sichuan Qingcheng Machinery, drawing on its participation in the LIGNA 2025 international trade fair, analyzed the gaps between domestic and international wood‑processing equipment and identified pathways for closing those gaps; meanwhile, Fujian Dishij Technology and Shenzhen DJI Innovation showcased the latest applications of intelligent feeding and sorting robots and drone‑based lifting technologies for agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries, highlighting the potential of integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and drones with traditional wood and bamboo industries.

This conference has established a high‑level platform for in-depth collaboration among industry, academia, research institutions, and end‑users in the wood and bamboo sector. It showcased the latest innovations in China’s wood and bamboo processing equipment and industrial technologies, while providing a precise assessment of industry trends and key technological priorities. The convening of this event will strongly propel breakthroughs in critical core technologies and the practical application of research outcomes, help address existing gaps in China’s wood and bamboo processing equipment, and enable Nanping to fully leverage its resource advantages as a major national bamboo‑producing region. At the same time, it will provide robust scientific and technological support for the nationwide wood and bamboo industry to achieve a fundamental transformation—from resource‑based strengths to industrial and economic competitiveness—thus paving the way for green, low‑carbon, high‑quality development.
