Stepping into the wood‑chip processing plant in Mashantou Village, Shunhe Town, Yongqiao District, Suzhou City, workers are operating a log‑clamping machine, feeding piles of tree roots, branches, and other waste wood into the crushing equipment. Within seconds, the jumbled scrap wood is transformed into uniform wood chips, which are then conveyed directly onto trucks for transport—this is a vivid example of Shunhe Town’s efforts to promote the resource‑based utilization of wood‑industry waste, achieving a win‑win outcome that combines ecological restoration with increased industrial income.
Shunhe Town is a provincial-level cluster town for wood‑board processing, with the wood‑board industry serving as its distinctive pillar sector. For a long time, waste wood materials generated during board production—such as tree roots, branches, and offcuts—have posed a significant challenge to rural governance due to the lack of standardized channels for their utilization. In the past, large quantities of wood‑industry waste were either burned on site, polluting the rural air, or left haphazardly piled up to decompose naturally. This not only occupied land, bred mosquitoes and other pests, and detracted from the village’s appearance but also resulted in serious resource wastage, becoming a major bottleneck hindering improvements in the living environment.
Leveraging the agglomeration advantages of the panel‑board industry, Shunhe Town is aligning with the trend toward green and low‑carbon development, unlocking the value of waste wood, driving the transformation and upgrading of the panel‑board sector, and strengthening the circular industrial chain in the wood products industry. Building on its existing industrial base, the town has fostered and attracted a number of enterprises specializing in the deep processing of waste materials, establishing a comprehensive circular system that spans “waste collection—crushing and processing—secondary utilization.”
At present, the town has attracted nearly 10 specialized wood‑chip processing enterprises, with a daily production capacity of up to 50 tons of wood chips and a stable, ample capacity for handling waste materials. The high‑quality wood chips produced are primarily supplied to three local medium‑ and high‑grade… Density board It serves as a high-quality raw material for premium board manufacturing and green energy production, supplying both wood-based panel manufacturers and two biomass pellet fuel companies.
The resourceful utilization of waste materials not only addresses environmental issues such as pollution and indiscriminate dumping caused by wood industry waste, but also creates entirely new avenues for increasing income. According to reports, after undergoing advanced processing, each ton of wood‑chip raw material can generate an additional revenue of 300 to 500 yuan.
Shunhe Town will continue to refine the wood industry’s value chain, enhance its value‑adding capabilities, and further optimize an integrated system for waste material collection, processing, and utilization, thereby promoting the green, high‑quality, and large‑scale development of the panelboard industry.
