The latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that, boosted simultaneously by the consumer goods trade-in program and the extended National Day-Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, China's consumer market demonstrated a steady recovery momentum in October. Notably, furniture consumption stood out particularly well, contrasting sharply with the sales trends of construction and decoration materials.

In October, the total retail sales of furniture products nationwide reached 17.9 billion yuan, representing a significant year-on-year increase of 9.6% and showcasing strong upward momentum. This positive trend was further confirmed by cumulative data: from January to October, furniture retail sales totaled 169.5 billion yuan, up a robust 19.9% compared to the same period last year, continuing the rapid growth trajectory that has characterized this category so far this year. This reflects the ongoing recovery of the furniture market, driven by both consumer-promoting policies and growing consumer demand for higher-quality home environments.

However, the market for construction and decoration materials—also part of the household consumption sector—continues to face challenges. In October, total retail sales of these products amounted to 14.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year decline of 8.3%. Looking at the cumulative data, from January to October, total retail sales reached 136.5 billion yuan, representing a slight year-on-year increase of just 0.5%. This weak growth underscores that demand for interior decoration and renovation—driven by the downstream segment of the real estate industry—has yet to fully recover, while market confidence remains in need of further restoration.

From an overall perspective, total retail sales of consumer goods from January to October surpassed 40 trillion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.3%. This growth rate was higher than both the same period last year and the full-year figure for the previous year. In October alone, total retail sales rose by 2.9% compared to the same month last year. Excluding automotive products, the growth rate of consumer goods retail sales reached 4.0%, accelerating by 0.8 percentage points from September, underscoring the steady foundation of consumption.

Analysts believe that the rapid growth in furniture consumption is driven by multiple factors. On one hand, consumer-boosting policies such as "trade-in programs" continue to deliver positive results, directly fueling demand for home furnishing upgrades. On the other hand, spurred by the holiday economy, residents now have more leisure time to focus on enhancing their family living standards, further boosting furniture purchases and replacements. Additionally, the rapid expansion of online shopping has opened up new avenues for furniture sales—between January and October, nationwide online retail sales surged 9.6% year-on-year, with many home furnishings even being sold through innovative platforms like livestreaming e-commerce.

Overall, October's consumer data paints a picture of both divergence and opportunity: furniture consumption has taken the lead in recovering, driven by both policy support and rising demand, while the building materials market is still waiting for the broader real estate sector to stabilize further. Looking ahead, as targeted initiatives aimed at boosting consumption gain momentum and new consumer trends and models continue to emerge, the internal structure of the furniture and building materials markets is likely to keep evolving. Ultimately, unlocking greater demand for home improvement and construction materials will be key to driving a full-fledged recovery in the broader home furnishings and lifestyle consumer market.
